Biographical history

In 1902, the Canadian Pacific Railway formed the Irrigation Branch to develop the Irrigation Block, a grant of lands extending between Medicine Hat and Calgary. The Branch was divided into three sections: Western, Central and Eastern. Planning for the construction of an irrigation system in the Eastern Section began in 1909. Construction began in 1910 and was completed in 1914. The lands within the Section were divided into various colonies for settlement, with names such as Duchess, St. Julien, Imperial, Russian, Duke of Sutherland, Gem and Bassano. The Eastern Section managed the lands and irrigation works until they were taken over by the Eastern Irrigation District in 1935.
