Administrative history

Created when the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod was encouraging the Canadian Church to become more independent, "The Canadian Lutheran" was begun in 1936 to cover the work of the Western provinces of the Canadian Church. There was also a German edition, der Canadisch-Lutherisches Kirchenblatt, which was published simultaneously. The editorial committees of each version were based around the home cities if the editor -- initially Edmonton for the Canadian Lutheran and Winnipeg for th Canadisch-Lutherisches Kirchenblatt. The early records of the Canadian Lutheran were integrated in the correspondence of the President of Concordia College, Edmonton -- Albert Schwermann -- since he was on the editorial board between 1936 and 1946. Pastor R.E. Meinzen of Winnipeg acted first as managing editor and then as editor until 1945 when he was succeeded by Pastor L.W. Koehler again in Winnipeg. In November of 1951 Pastor Donald R. Ortner began is term as editor, still based in Winnipeg and he served until August of 1952. Koehler again edited two issues with a permanent replacement found in Fred Gabert in Vancouver from Nov 1952 until December 1962. Pastor W.R. Holzheimer of Saskatchewan next took over as editor and served until Pastor John Nielson of Montgomery, Alberta moved from the president of the Editorial Board into the Editor's chair November 1967 -- June 1971. Pastor Karl Krahenbil of Saskatchewan assumed that chair until the paper ceased publications in March 1977. The periodical suspended publication when financial support faltered during discussion of creating a National Lutheran to report of the whole of Lutheran Church-Canada. The Canadisch-Lutheranisches Kirchenblatt was edited first by Schwermann and Meinzen with assistance from Professor A. Guebert and Pastor A. J. Mueller in the early 40s. In August 1944 A. J. Mueller in Edmonton assumed the position of editor and served until July 1952. He was succeeded by Pastor Wiegner of Bruno, Saskatchewan who remained as editor until the Kirchenblatt ceased publication in December 1959.
