Biographical history

The Canadian Friends of the Hebrew University was founded in 1944 by the late Allan Bronfman with a mandate to raise awareness and financial support for the Hebrew University of Alberta. The Edmonton Chapter was first organized by the late Bory Margolus in 1962, and continued under his leadership for many years. The chapter was reorganized at the end of 1991 under the leadership of Elexis Schloss and Kayla Shoctor. A Young Leadership Group and an Alumni Association were formed at the same time. From its inception in 1925 as a nucleus of three research institutes -- chemistry, microbiology and Jewish studies, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem today embraces seven faculties and twelve schools. Its four campuses in Jerusalem and Rehovot cater to a unique full time student population of 20,000 comprising Jews, Christians, Moslems and Druse, attesting to the University's mandate to be a non-denominational institution.
