Biographical history

In 1961 the Calgary Council of Community Services of Calgary, Alberta began studying the needs of native people in the city. Working with other organizations, including the Local Council of Women and the University Women's Club, the Calgary Indian Friendship Centre was established in 1964. In February 1965 a petition, organized by Pauline Dempsey, was sent to the provincial government. It charged that the centre was dominated by non-natives, there was a lack of constructive programs for teenagers, mishandling of funds and other problems. In response, the Calgary Indian Services Committee was formed in March 1965 to focus on the service needs of urban native peoples, and to facilitate effective programs through the Friendship Centre. The chairman was Tom Lawrence, and Pauline Dempsey was on the executive.
