Administrative history

In 1891 members of Montreal's Sisters of Charity (Grey Nuns) established the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary. The hospital moved the following year to a site on the banks of the Elbow River, where it expanded regularly. In 1907 a School of Nursing was established which operated until 1979. In 1928 the hospital was renovated and in 1950, 1976 and 1974 new wings were built. In 1969 the Holy Cross Hospital was sold to the Province of Alberta and in 1971 control was transferred to the Metro-Calgary and Rural General Hospital District No. 93. The Holy Cross was known for leading cardiac and mental health programs. The Colonel Belcher Hospital opened in a warehouse in 1919, and moved to another warehouse in 1926. It was administered by the federal Department of Veterans Affairs. In 1941 construction of a new facility at the corner of 12th Avenue and 4th Street S.W. began. It was expanded in 1956 and renovated in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1980 administration of the hospital was transferred to the Metro-Calgary and Rural General Hospital District No. 93. The Rockyview General Hospital was the first hospital controlled by the Metro-Calgary and Rural General Hospital District No. 93. It was opened in 1966 and expanded in 1986 and 1988. In 1983 the District was given the responsibility of building and administering the new Peter Lougheed General Hospital in N.E. Calgary, but a year before its 1988 opening, control of the new hospital was transferred to the Calgary General Hospital. Before the transfer, the District changed its name to the Calgary District Hospital Group. On March 31, 1995 the CDHG ceased to exist, and authority over its three hospitals was transferred to the Calgary Regional Health Authority. The Holy Cross Hospital was closed in 1996.
