Biographical history

B'nai Brith was begun in 1843 as a philanthropic organization in New York City. By the turn of the century, B'nai Brith lodges had been created throughout the United States of America and most of Canada. B'nai Brith Canada was founded in 1964 and became known as District 22. B'nai Brith lodges in Western Canada continued to be affiliated with the Northwest Council and District 6 out of Chicago. In 1982, the Western Canadian lodges opted to join District 22 and B'nai Brith Canada. Also in 1986, and reflecting a new commitment to political advocacy, B'nai Brith opened an office in Edmonton with David Goldberg as Northwest Regional Director. In 1987, Debby Glaser took over as Northwest Regional Director. During this period, the Edmonton Office actively campaigned against anti-Semitism in Canadian and Alberta society, including the controversy surrounding Eckville high school teacher James Keegstra. The Edmonton Office of B'nai Brith Canada closed in 1989.
