Biographical history
The United Farm Women of Alberta started in 1916 from earlier roots as the women's auxiliary of the United Farmers of Alberta. It was dedicated to improving the education and well being of farm families throughout the province. In 1949 the organization merged with the women's auxiliary of the Alberta Farmers' Union to create the Farm Women's Union of Alberta. In 1970, as a result of another merger, the organization changed its name to Women of Unifarm. In 1996 it became part of Wild Rose Agricultural Producers. The provincial organization disbanded in 2000. In 1919 the women of the Blindman Valley, Blackfalds and Aspelund districts formed the United Farm Women of Alberta, Roseleaf Local No. 232. In 1949, it became the Farm Women's Union of Alberta, Roseleaf Local No. 908; and upon the shift to District 10 in 1952, it became Local No. 1023. In 1970 the organization became the Blindman Women of Unifarm (in District 91 of Region 9 of Unifarm) and maintained that name until its dissolution in 1999. Known presidents of the organization were: Mrs. F. H. Miller (1919), Mrs. E. R. Ironside (1920-1921, 1938-1942), Golda Hukill (1922), Mrs. Emil Schmidt (1923-1924), Mrs. Wigmore (1925, 1928-1931), Mrs. Phillip Schmidt (1926-1927, 1934-1935, 1943-1945), Mrs. W. Schmidt (1932-1933, 1936-1937), Mrs. C. Riis, Jr. (1946-1947), Mrs. R. Carlyle (1948, 1955-1956), Lyla Pickering (1949-1950, 1952), Mrs. J. Park (1951).
