Biographical history
Big Lake Environment Support Society was formed in St. Albert, Alberta in 1991. Its aims include raising the interest of the public in Big Lake, and making available recreational activities on or near the lake such as walking trails, canoe trips, and bird-watching. Environmental education for children is another activity. Another aim is to protect the natural wildlife habitat on and near the lake. A shelter in Red Willow Park and a viewing platform were built, and fund-raising activities such as an auction and dinner, and a Winter Fest were held in some years to raise money. Other activities included a project to dig up the Purple Loosestrife by the river valley. B.L.E.S.S. was a leader in the campaign to prevent the Western Boundary Bypass from being built at Big Lake.

Scope and content
The fonds includes correspondence, planning documents, position papers, grant applications, objectives, proposals, environmental assessment, policy statements, financial reports, membership lists, miscellaneous business and environmental information, newsletters and newspaper clippings, and articles pertaining to Society activities, including bird counts, Octoberfest, and construction of the viewing habitat. Includes correspondence with other environmental societies, Environment Minister Jean Charest, Edmonton Metropolitan Regional Planning Commission, Alberta Environment Fish and Wildlife Services, the City of St. Albert, and Northwestern Utilities regarding a station site.
