Biographical history

Betty Garbutt, 1924- , was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and moved to Calgary with her mother at the age of two, after her parents separated. She lived in several Alberta towns including Cardston, Red Deer and Lacombe. She trained as an x-ray technician at the University of Alberta Hospital. She was very active in the field of education, and served as provincial president of the Alberta Federation of Home and School Associations, 1964-1966, executive director of Calgary's Canadian Cancer Society, 1966, Coordinator of Women's Programs for the Calgary Board of Education, 1968, and as a consultant for the Alberta Department of Advanced Education, 1974. She helped found the Contemporary Women program, the School for Unwed Mothers, and the Canadian Committee on Learning Opportunities for Women. She married George Garbutt in 1947 and they had three sons, Allan, 1949- , Frederick George, 1951- , and Tracy John, 1959- .
