Biographical history

Mrs. Alice Barnhill (nee Monroe) is the widow to the late Alexander Barnhill Junior. Mr. Barnhill, who lived from 1901-1970, had resided in Wetaskiwin for most of his life. His father, Alexander Barnhill Senior, co-owned one of the first livery stables in Wetaskiwin in the early 1900's; the Hanna & Barnhill Livery Stable on Pearce Street. In 1936 Alex Barnhill Jr. and Herb Chandler started the News-Advertiser, which was then situated in the basement of the Wales Hotel. In 1938, Mr. Barnhill became sole proprietor and publisher of the paper, which he operated until his death in 1970. Alice Barnhill passed away in 1991.

Scope and content

Fonds consists of materials created and collected by the Barnhill family of Wetaskiwin from 1895-1939. The fonds consists of these series: 1. Personal Papers (1921-1939) Series consists of mortgages, legal documents, insurance policies, land titles and other materials relating to Mrs. Jane A. Barnhill's personal finances. 2. Photographs (1895- ca. 1930) Consists of photographs of Mr. Barnhill Sr. (1895), the family home (1903), photograph of two groups of Wetaskiwin citizens (1920, ca. 1930) and a photograph of students and teachers in front of Alexandra School (1908).
