Biographical history
Laurence Banting, 1898-1975, was born and educated in Broadstairs, Kent, England. One of 2 children of Edgar and Eveline Banting, he ran away from home in 1914 and served in the British Army in the First World War. In 1919, he emigrated to Canada and farmed in the Pine Lake district of Alberta. He moved to Red Deer, Alberta in 1925 and farmed there until he sold his land to the Red Deer College in 1970. A remittance man from a wealthy English family, he was a frequent philanthropist in Red Deer until his death. He remained a bachelor and had no children. Edgar Banting, ca. 1860-1950, was a wealthy solicitor and insurance underwriter, the younger son of William Banting, fl. 1850, an antique furniture dealer in London, England. He married Eveline in 1897. They had 2 children: Laurence Banting, 1898-1975, and Gladys Baker, 1903-1971. Edgar was interested in ornithology and was a long term member of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds

Fonds consists of the diaries (1932-1973), correspondence (1947, 1950), financial records (1928-1961), and photographs (1911-1970) of Edgar Banting and his son Laurence Banting, as well as a manuscript antique furniture catalogue and valuation book of William Banting (1850) and a share certificate for Theatre Royal Drury Lane Company (1812);The fonds consists of the following series:;I.
