Biographical history

French programs at the Centre began in 1940 with the Banff French Summer School Immersion program, leading to the development of an Oral French Division in 1941. The French Department succeeded the latter in 1968 and offered six-week summer immersion programs for secondary school students from 1969-1971, expanding to a year-round accredited program in 1972. The department also offered three-week programs for federal civil servants until its dissolution in 1977. Heads of the department include Philippe Laroch (1968-1977).
