Kathleen Maude Baines (1895-1977) was born in Birmingham, England to John Sleath (1866-1931), a non-commissioned officer in the Royal Horse Artillery, and Clara Annie Shotton (1866-1908), a former school teacher. In 1905, the family moved to Red Deer, Alberta, where John Sleath found clerical work with the Canadian Pacific Railway and acted as janitor at the Presbyterian Ladies College in Red Deer. In 1945, Kathleen Maude married Thomas Baines, a local area farmer. In later years, she was noted as an amateur painter
