Biographical history

Amelia Brown, 1873-1958, was born in Palmerston, Ontario. In 1898 she moved to Alberta and taught school at Shepard, near Calgary. She moved to Butte, Montana, USA for a short time, where she worked as a journalist under the pen name Albert or Alberta West. She returned to Alberta and in 1903 married William John Banister. They had four children, including John Weston, Franklin and Emmeline (Hedley). William was the son of Albert E. Banister who came to Alberta from England in 1884 and established a ranch on the Bow River near Davisburg. The Banister home was named the "Grotto". Amelia and William ranched until 1919, moved to Vancouver Island, and subsequently to Ontario. In Port Hope, Ontario, ca. 1950, Amelia compiled "Chinook Medley", a three-part novel based on stories she had written continually from the time she first moved west. She does not appear to have attempted publication. She moved to Toronto after her husband died.
