Biographical history
In 1966, the City of Red Deer was handed control of the local bus service by Sorenson Bus Lines Ltd. In September 1966, bus operators voted to join the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1374. The new Local elected a committee consisting of Syd Kemble -- Chairman, Gordon May -- Secretary, and Harry Brown -- Committee Man. The Union served as the primary negotiator for the bus operators in terms of bargaining for, and ratifying new collective agreements with the City. It would also be available as a means of support for any member who had a grievance with management or a fellow employee. The Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 1374 continues to represent bus operators and service personnel employed by Red Deer Transit. In 1995 the Union consisted of 44 members, by 2004 there were 62 full and part time drivers.
