Dates of Founding and/or Dissolution:;In 1970 the Government of Alberta established the Alberta Educational Communications Authority, (AECA) in the person of the Minister of Education with an advisory committee to consider the use of broadcasting for educational purposes and make recommendations for future policy, (OC, 217/70). The Authority primary recommendation was the establishment of an educational communications corporations to co-ordinate most of the activities in educational broadcasting in Alberta. In 1973, the AECA was redefined in the legislation that created the Alberta Educational Communication Corporation. The Authority was disbanded when the corporation was privatized, April 1, 1995. Functional Responsibility:;The function and powers of the AECA are set out in the enabling legislation, the Alberta Educational Communication Corporation Act (S.A. Chapter 3, 1973). The role of the AECA was to relate the work of Alberta Educational Communication Corporation to existing departments, institutions, and agencies which already had been given responsibilities to meet the broad cultural and educational needs of the people of Alberta. The AECA, according to the legislation establishing the corporation, was responsible for approval of Corporation by-laws, budgets, purchase of land, and advances for capital expenditures. The AECA identified educational needs, recommended priorities and gave guidance to the Corporation concerning the production, acquisition, sales, leasing, etc. of materials of educational nature, whether for use in broadcasting or otherwise. Administrative Relationships:;The AECA requested and transmitted reports from the Alberta Educational Communication Corporation to the appropriate government minister. Administrative Structure:;From 1973 to 1974 the Authority was under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Education and the Minister of Advanced Education. From 1980 to 1981 the Authority was under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Education, Minister of Advanced Education and Manpower and the Minister of Utilities and Telephones. From 1981 to 1982 the Authority was under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Education, the Minister of Advanced Education and Manpower and the Minister of Telephones. In December of 1982 (OC 1185/82), the administration of the Alberta Educational Communication Corporation Act was transferred to the Minister of Utilities and Telephones. From 1984 to 1991 the Authority was under the jurisdiction of the Minister of Technology, Research and Telecommunications. In 1992, the Minister of Public Works, Supply and Service became the body to which AECA and the Alberta Educational Communication Corporation reported to. In December of 1982, by Order in Council 1185/82, the AECA was disbanded. In the same year, by Order in Council 1172/82, the Board of Directors of Alberta Educational Communication Corporation was appointed as the Alberta Educational Communications Authority.
