The Ag Society Race Meet Committee was formed in 1973, representing a transfer of race meet governance from the Lake McGregor Memorial Park Association / Milo Race Meet Association, whose membership continued to oversee most aspects of the meet. It was a two-day event, often including a parade, midway, dances, foot races, boy’s and girl’s races, novelty races, gymkhana events, penning competitions, pony wagon races, ladies barrel races, thoroughbred races and a Queen contest. Pari-mutuel wagering was offered on the thoroughbred race events, part of the Canada West Turf Association circuit. Some years saw the added attraction of a demolition derby, and concessions were run by the Legion, Women’s Institute and Milo Lions Club, assisted by the Lutheran and United Church Women. Proceeds from the event were used to support a wide range of projects and activities, such as local hockey teams, the girl’s baseball team, Milo Alphabets Kindergarten Society, the Snake Valley Drop-In Centre, Milo Gymnastics Club, and both the Milo and Queenstown Halls.
The Lions Race Meet Committee was formed in 1986, and took over the running of the Race Meet from the Ag Society Race Meet Committee until its final year, 1991. The Ag Society Race Meet Committee continued to hold certain investments which were used to supply the float for the race meet each year, and also to support other Ag Society committees. Both race meet committees were formally disbanded in 1994, when the lease on the race track land was returned to the provincial government. The buildings and the rails around the track were demolished, and the bleachers moved to Milo. The Ag Society Race Meet Committee’s remaining funds were transferred to the Head Committee to be invested and used for other projects, and the Lions Race Meet Committee’s remaining funds were donated to the Milo Lions Club.
The series consists of minute books, a race track lease, correspondence, sponsor lists, jockey ledgers, ephemera, and clippings relating to the Ag Society-Lions Race Meet, including two oversize posters (1978 and 1985). The realia includes a fabric badge and an embossed belt buckle.
