Biographical history
Adrian Montrose “Pete” Hope was born November 9, 1903 in Morinville, Northwest Territories; he was the son of Harry and Marie Cecile (Kelly) Hope. His father was a Scotsman and his mother a Cree woman; as a result, Adrian was brought up in both cultures. While Harry was Indian agent at Alexander First Nation Reserve #134, Adrian was able to learn the Cree language and about Cree history. He was a farm labourer, interpreter, fisherman, professional rodeo cowboy, writer and poet; as well, he was active within various Indigenous communities. In 1928, he and Joseph Dion organized the Métis Association of Alberta. Adrian was president of the Métis Association of Alberta from 1960 to 1967 and secretary-treasurer of the Alberta Federation of Métis Settlements, which he helped establish in 1973. Adrian was also involved in forming the Alberta Native Communications Society. Adrian was later a resident of the Kikino Métis Settlement. In 1982, Adrian’s Stories in rhyme: a collection of poetry, with an introduction by Grant MacEwan, was published by the Alberta Federation of Metis Settlement Associations. Adrian and wife Julia de Pagie had three daughters, Charlotte, Dorothy and Margaret. Adrian Hope died in February 1986.
Custodial history
The Provincial Museum of Alberta, on behalf of Margaret Gross (née Hope), daughter of Adrian Hope, deposited the records in the Provincial Archives of Alberta in 1988.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of the personal records of Adrian Hope and includes day to day journals, a Métis Association of Alberta membership card, correspondence, the poem "The Fate of Jim Brady," an audio recording of a CBC program where Adrian Hope discussed Métis and his own history, an interview with Adrian Hope conducted by Terry Lusty, and an audio recording of the Saddle Lake Indian Days.
