Zubick, Jack J.

John J. Zubick, 1897-1972, was born in Siberia, Russia of German descent. He came to the USA as a child and moved to western Canada in 1910. During the First World War he served with the 5th Canadian Battalion and on his return taught school in Saskatchewan. For eight years he edited a Saskatchewan weekly newspaper. He moved to Calgary, Alberta in 1933 and became business manager of the Calgary Artificial Limb Company. He was strongly opposed to the Social Credit Party and undertook a personal campaign of speeches and radio broadcasts to discredit the party. He also published the anti-Social Credit newspaper, The Rebel, from 1937 to 1939. During the Second World War he served with the British Army as press chief in Germany and rose to the rank of major. In the 1950s he worked as an insurance underwriter and was very active in the Conservative Party. He retired to Victoria ca. 1963.

Zeller, Roy

Roy Zeller, [ca. 1895-1947], moved from Kitchener, Ontario to Alberta between 1914 and 1918. He married Lucille, 1896-1982, and they established a garage in Exshaw, Alberta about 1926. During the summers Lucille ran the Bowfort Service Station and tea room nine miles east of Exshaw. In 1943 or 1944 they retired to the New Westminster area, BC.

Zaghetto, Gerardo

Gerardo Zaghetto, 1914-2013, was born in Italy and immigrated to Calgary, Alberta in 1949, along with his wife Rosa, and two daughters. He was one of the first Italians to come to Calgary after the Second World War. He was employed by Weismose Furniture from 1950 until his retirement in 1980. He was active in the Circolo Crociato and the Calgary Italian Club.

Yule, Helen

Helen Carlyle, 1899-1988, was born in Madison, Wisconsin, USA, the daughter of William L. Carlyle, manager of the EP Ranch from 1919 to 1942. Helen received a degree in animal husbandry at Kansas State University and a masters degree in genetics at the University of California Berkeley. She moved to Alberta ca. 1920s, and in 1928 married Charles Yule, 1888-1958, a cattle breeder, importer, and the secretary manager of the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. They had two sons, David, and William C. "Bill". Helen was active in many community activities and associations.

Yukon Field Force

On March 21, 1898 an Order-in-Council ordered a detachment of Canadian Army Permanent Force to be sent to Fort Selkirk, Yukon Territory. The Yukon Field Force was created to assist the North-West Mounted Police (NWMP) in maintaining law and order in the Klondike and to act as a symbol of Canadian sovereignty in the face of American influence in the Yukon. The 200 member force was drawn primarily from the Royal Canadian Dragoons and the Royal Regiment of Canadian infantry. The Commanding Officer was Lt. Col. T.D.B. Evans. The force departed from Ottawa in 1898, picked up members in Winnipeg, went on to Vancouver, then travelled by ship to Wrangell, Alaska. From there the force went on to Glenora, British Columbia and Fort Selkirk. YFF built a garrison at Fort Selkirk and were withdrawn by 1900. Y's Men's Club of Calgary

The Y's Men's Clubs were established in Toledo, Ohio in 1920 and consisted of men active in the Young Men's Christian Associatin (YMCA) who were eager to further assist the organization. The International Association formed in 1922 and the movement spread to Canada in 1923. A chapter was established in Calgary, Alberta that year and a second, the South Calgary Y's Men's Club in the 1960s. The organization acts as a service club, to serve its community as an outreach arm of the YMCA. Each club has projects that suit the needs of the community. A new constitution was adopted in 1973 allowing women to be members.

Y's Menettes Club of Calgary

The Y's Menettes Club of Calgary was formed in Calgary, Alberta in 1947 by a group of wives of Y's Men who wished to enjoy social activities together and to assist the Y's Men's Club of Calgary with fund-raising projects and teas. The Y's Men's is a social and fund-raising service group for the Young Men's Christian Association of Calgary. The Y's Menettes merged with the Y's Men in 1974.
