Mills (family)

James William Mills, born in Richibucto, New Brunswick in 1859, came west with the militia in 1885. He began working for the Hudson's Bay Company in 1890 as a clerk, was made a riverboat captain in 1893, and retired from that post in 1923. He captained the SS Wrigley, SS Fort McMurray and SS Liard. He also built the SS Athabasca River, the SS MacKenzie River, and the SS Slave River. He married Louisa Camsell (1873-1954) of Fort Simpson, NWT in 1896 and they had five children: Julian, Seton, Clarence, Ernest, and Violet. The Mills family moved to Athabasca, AB in 1912 and lived there for five years. They had a cabin at Baptiste Lake. Seton was killed in WWI in 1917. James died in 1933. Violet was born in 1901 and died in Edmonton in 2003.

The Vagina Monologues Athabasca

The Vagina Monologues, by Eve Ensler, was produced by a group of locals for the benefit of PRAAC, (Prevention of Relationship Abuse Action Committee) from the official script for the 2017 V-Day Campaigns. Twenty-two actors were involved and rehearsals were held at the NCoR train station in Athabasca started in January, 2017. The show was performed on Feburary 25, 2017 at 7:30 pm at the Nancy Appleby Theatre in Athabasca,

Athabasca Skating Club

The first mention of an Athabasca figure skating club is a photograph of the February 1973 Krystal Karnival. The club president was Evelyn Begoray and the professional coach was Anne Spencer. The Athabasca Arena opened in February 1972 and closed in 2008 when the Athabasca Regional Multiplex was opened. The ASC continues to operate and is an entity of Skate Canada. Speculating on the growth of Athabasca Landing because the Northern Alberta Railway would put a line from Edmonton to Athabasca Landing in 1912, the Edmonton Land Company Limited speculatively developed "Central Park," a subdivision of the Landing outside the Hudson Bay Co. Lands in the location of present day Pioneer Estates.

Blair Jean was born on February 23, 1953 in Kelowna BC to Bernard and Ferne Jean; one of seven children, Charles, Mary, Lawrence, Blair, Kathy Guy and Susan. Up until 1967, the family lived in the farmhouse which the Jeans had built in 1950 on a 12-acre orchard and mixed farm on the west side of Okanogan Lake at the base of Boucherie Mountain. Bernard Jean was in London, Ontario.
