Welsh, Alfred P.

Alfred Peter Welsh, 1858-1949, was born in Somerset, England. He came to Alberta in 1883. He served with Steele's Scouts during the 1885 Riel Rebellion (North West Rebellion). He then established a ranch in the Sheep Creek (Millarville) area. In 1890 he married Alice Maud Mary le Bagge, ?-1904, who was originally from Waterford County, Ireland. They had four children who survived to adulthood, Arabella, Leonard, Helen Barbara le Bagge (Averill), 1898-?, and Charles William Henry le Bagge "Harry", 1900-?. The ranch was named Ardmore Ranch after Alice's home in Ireland. The Welshes were very active in Christ Church, Millarville. Alfred remarried in 1908. He and his second wife, Edith, had one daughter, Clodagh (Strallendorf). In 1918 the ranch was sold to Thomas Barnes and the Welshes moved to Duncan, British Columbia.

Rathgeber, Alfred

Alfred (Alf) Rathgeber was born December 28, 1928 in Winfield, Alberta, the son of Rudolph and Pauline Rathgeber. The family had moved to Winfield from Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1925 so that Rudolph could work at Sandford Nelson's sawmill with his three oldest sons. The family farmed the southeast quarter of section 4, Township 47, Range 3, West of the 5th Meridian (4-47-3-W5). In 1956 Alf married Ruth Haskell from Three Hills, Alberta; they had three daughters, Lois Ruth, Karen Elaine, and Heather Pauline. They moved to Creston, British Columbia, where Alf was a sawyer in a lumber mill. In 2005 Ruth and Alf retired to Camrose.

McKay, Alfred Sidney

Alfred Sidney McKay, 1860-1940, was born in Woodbridge, Ontario and joined Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) survey crews in Ontario and the prairies from 1879 to 1880. He soon settled west of Calgary (across the Bow River from Edworthy Park) and remained there for the rest of his life. He was very interested in civic affairs and was engaged in ranching in Simons Valley. Beginning in the 1920s McKay was very active with the Southern Alberta Pioneers' and Old Timers' Association. He and his wife, Catherine Hemmings, had at least five sons, Alfred Edward, ?-1969, William A., 1906-1976, Herbert Charles, 1899-?, Gordon J., ?-1988, and Victor Joseph, ?-1966.

Carrothers, Alfred W.R.

Alfred William Rooke Carrothers (1924-1998) was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan on June 1, 1924. He took his undergraduate education at the University of British Columbia, receiving a BA in 1947 and an LLB in 1948. He then attended Harvard Law School and earned an LLM in 1951 and a Doctorate of Juridical Science in 1966. Carrothers joined the Faculty of Law at UBC as a lecturer in 1948 and became a full professor in 1960. In 1964 he became Dean, Faculty of Law at the University of Western Ontario, and in 1969 was appointed President of The University of Calgary, a position he held until 1974. He was involved in numerous learned societies and public service groups including serving as president of the Association of Canadian Law Teachers (1966-1967) and as chair of the Advisory Committee on the Development of Government in the North West Territories (1965-1966). He and his wife, Jane, had three children. Alfred W. R. Carrothers died on May 4, 1998 in Victoria, British Columbia at the age of 73.

Shackleford, Alfred William

Alfred William Shackleford born in Essex, England in 1899 and came to Calgary with his parents in 1909. He was trained as a draftsman after high school graduation but was employed by the Film Exchange and Fox Films. In 1921, he was hired to manage the King's Theatre in Lethbridge and became associated with Mark Rogers, a Lethbridge businessman who owned three Lethbridge movie theatres. By 1925, he was part-owner of a theatre, and, by 1933, he controlled the three main theatres in Lethbridge. He served as mayor of Lethbridge from 1944- 1947, 1952-1955, 1957-1961. He was also active in a number of community organizations, including the Rotary Club, Gyro Club, the Board of Trade, and the Cancer Society.

Darwin (Dar) E. Alfrey was born in Didsbury, Alberta on September 2, 1931 to a farming couple in the Carstairs, Alberta area. Growing up, he worked at a men's clothing store, delivered groceries, played AA baseball and worked for the railroad as a telegraph operator near Lake Louise, Alberta. He eventually found a career with the Bank of Montreal, and was transferred around the province for this position. During 1955, he was transferred to Westlock, Alberta where he met his future wife. Rita J. Peterson was born on May 5, 1933 in Wetaskiwin, Alberta to the manager of the local Coop store and a homemaker. She worked at Deer Lodge in the summer before finishing High School. After high school she attended the Royal Alexander School of Nursing, graduating in 1955. During her work at the Immaculata Hospital in Westlock, she met Dar. The pair married on June 1, 1957 and moved to Bow Island, Alberta. Rita carried on with nursing and Dar with banking. They were soon transferred to Calgary, Alberta where their son, Dwight, was born in 1959. They were transferred to Regina, Saskatchewan in 1962, where their daughter Chris was born on August 27. Soon after, they were transferred again to Sioux Lookout, Ontario and then to Port Arthur, Ontario (now part of Thunder Bay). In 1966, they were transferred back to Edmonton, Alberta where they remained. Dar stayed in banking, working with the Bank of Montreal, the Principal Trust Company and ending his career with the Alberta Treasury Branches. He served on the executive of the Steele Heights Community League and on the executive of the Northeast Rotary Club in Edmonton for many years including work with Rotary International. He served as District Governor (District 536) in 1995-1996. Rita returned to nursing at the Royal Alexander Hospital in Edmonton, which by this time had become the Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital. Rita took on various roles in the community, serving on the Parents' Advisory Board for different schools, the Boards of the Edmonton YWCA and Rotary Anns, and was part of the founding group for McClure United Church. She was a creative person, spending her free time sewing, quilting, knitting, doing petit point, singing in the McClure choir, rug hooking, and many other creative pastimes. Rita and Dar enjoyed doing many things together including curling, dancing, meeting with their friends, cross country skiing and camping. Camping holidays were standard during the years Chris and Dwight were in school, and they spent time in the mountains. Dar Alfrey died on February 5, 2004.

Donahue, Alice

William Clifford Donahue was born June 19,1900 in Virden, Manitoba. He graduated from the Manitoba Agricultural College - Dairying and gained employment in the creamery business. In 1937 he married Alice Blanche Baird whom he met in New Norway, Alberta where they both worked. That same year they moved to Athabasca, Alberta where Clifford was the co-owner/operator of the Athabasca Creamery. He later become sole owner of the creamery and operated it until 1965. During his years in Athabasca, he was involved with the Chamber of Commerce, Curling Club, Golf Club, Agricultural Society and served on Town Council for 17 years. He died in 1970. Alice Blanche Baird was born November 1, 1906 in Red Willow, Alberta. She attended school in Red Willow and Stettler and went on to Camrose Normal School to become a teacher. She taught at Red Willow and New Norway before her marriage to Clifford Donahue. They moved to Athabasca where she continued her career by teaching at several rural schools around Athabasca. She obtained a teaching position at Athabasca Public School in 1942, where she worked until her retirement in 1972. She continued to tutor and substitute teach until 1987. Throughout her years in Athabasca, she was involved in a number of community organizations, such as the Red Cross, Home and School Association, Athabasca Historical Society and the Athabasca Public Library, where she served as secretary from 1946-1988. She received numerous awards of recognition for her community efforts. She died in 1988.
